Infos - News
Mon Colonel and Miss Roberta,
Namens Roger, the Musicmen, en
Captain Burton C. Mossman.

Dear Third Texas:
I am proud to announce a surprise communication with another 3rd Texas Cavalry Reenactment group, The Third Texas Cavalry Company E of Belgium. No it is not a new city near Houston; it is the country in Europe. Colonel Virgil Mathews contacted me last week and requested that they be allowed to call themselves by that numerical recognition with the blessings of our group as Col. Hair my predecessor had. I quickly granted as well as forwarding to our brothers in arms an invitation to join us when ever practicable. Their website is www.3rdtexascavalry.com and is very interesting. The majority is in English and as you can see below Col. Virgil writes as well as any number of students I have attempted to teach, no they all have not been as good as those of you who have chosen this hobby. They have included on their site a link to ours and copies of pertinent correspondences between the Colonel and myself. On behalf of our new friends I ask that if any of you have come across a “Christian” name for company E such as ours for Company C, “The Lone Star Defenders.” If you have or do please forward that information on to me ASAP.

I am sorry to hear that you to have political problems in this wonderful
hobby. I too have had problems with self appointed leaders who do not
know how to order a set to move out much less any larger body of men. We
did have one once who was very well studied and knew the manuals but
lack of practical experience proved to be his undoing.
If contacted by this person I will of course treat him with all do respect, but I do and will honor your relationship with my predecessor as well as the relationship and friendship we now share. I will soon send you information about a small fun living history event we do near Houston, Texas in November for your consideration as well as information on the Pleasant Hill Battle in Louisiana a year from now. If possible I personal invite you and any of your people to join us. I will type more later.

Dear Sir:
It is with great pleasure that I receive your communications. I began my living history experience 26 years ago at Pleasant Hill, La., on the actual battlefield. We are headquartered in East Texas around Nacogdoches, Texas about 20 miles east of Mountain Home in Rusk, Texas, Gen. Hogg’s home. In short we are where the Shuttle crashed. I will put you on our mailing list for the FS&H and if you like on our regular mailing list where you will receive all our communications. The FS&H please feel free to pass on to any and all who may find it interesting. We are a Christian family oriented group and are associated with the Boy Scouts of America. Please know that you and or any members of your unit are always welcome to come over and join with us. We have people in the Houston area capable of picking you up at the airport and if flying your mounts is not possible we could find suitable mounts for one or two with proper pre-notification.
Our unit as it is today was founded in 2001 with a membership of 25-30 men and women with about 8 mounted troopers and 10 dismounted. We work with three other groups to put 40-50 combatants on the field at most events. Denny Hair is an old friend and I will get a copy of your message to him. He is retired from living history and has followed his other passion in a Christian band, Thunder. You may find his website if you search for “Thunder the Band.”
Our website is www.3rdtxcav.org and also contains information about us as well as information from Denny’s old site. I do not have a report completed yet on the Shiloh reenactment. It was somewhat of a disappointment as there were only some 6000 Reenactors of the expected 13,000. We had fun despite the lack of numbers.
I will look and see what Company E’s “Christian” name was as I am sure it had one. I am lucky to work at Stephen F. Austin State University, in Nacogdoches which is home to the East Texas Research Center. We have a lot of the primary documents from East Texas history housed in our archivesJ
I am Dyson Venn Nickle, Jr. of the clan McDonald on my mother’s father’s side and a Colquhoun on my father’s mother’s side. The Nickle’s are Irish and my mother’s mother was a Vick so I guess German which I know is not very definitive, you may know the name better than I do. My families have fought in every major war to include the one that made us a nation, the United States and TexasJ
I will see what I can find out about your ancestor and where he fought and forward my findings to you. Attached are some pictures from our latest adventure to include my family and the group that went to Corinth and Shiloh. I do hope that you are able to travel here one day and take part in a battle with us. I look forward to a continued friendship and please know that I to struggle with American so we will communicate just fineJ

Bonjour Ré-enacteurs
A bientôt, j'espère
Hello Re-enactors
Following the starting of the company E of 3rd Texas Cavalry in Belgium (SCA), I
launch a call to all those which are interested in the American civil war of
1860 to 1865.
We have tents and accessories and we are eager to meet other Units at the time
of organization of festivals, camps or Councils.
Our company is Trilingue, but we seek to contact friends, not extremists or
fanatics, we simply seek all to live certain moments out of the modern life and
to put to us completely for a day and more in the skin of another character.
If you to organize camps or festival, that our presence interests you, we await
your invitation but warn us in advance.
So long, I hope
